description

A very stylish Bohemian ceramic candle holder from the Ditmar-Urbach AG from Czechoslovakia. This is a wonderful example of Czech Art deco pottery from the renowned Czech artisan pottery studio. The form borders on mid century modern period and is on the edge of art deco and modernism forming an interesting crossover period. The white exterior matt glaze is complimented by the black glaze to the interior bowl. The candle holder is marked to the base with the factory mark which dates it from the 1930s. The candle holder is in excellent condition.

Ditmar-Urbach AG: The factory has a varied and fascinating history1882 the factory was founded by the Urbach brothers and named, Bros Urbach.
1912 it was then taken over by Imperially and Royally Privileged Wilhemsberg-Earthenware Factory in Wilhelmsberg, Austria, owned by Richard Lichtenstern, who also owned Rudolf Ditmar Heirs factory in Znojmo, Czechia (Znaim, Moravia, Austria). At some point, the Urbach and Ditmar factories were combined to create one entity.
1913 the company was bought by Triptis AG in Triptis.
1919 Triptis AG was dissolved and the former owner Richard Lichtenstern bought back the company, Lictenstern maintained ownership, but split the factories to create two companies, Ditmar-Urbach AG and Wilhemlmsberger Eartheware Factory Richard Lichtenstern & Co.
1938 it was confiscated by the Nazis and became Ostmark-Ceramics AG.
1945 the factory was nationalized.
Present status unknown. (With thanks to Ginnys Antiques for History of factory)
